
What it's all about?
The President’s Award-Kenya (PA-K) is an exciting self-development programme available to all young people countrywide equipping them with positive life skills to make a difference for themselves, their communities, country and the world. The Award is a member of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Association, which oversees the Award Programme for young people in over one hundred and twenty countries. Structure
There are 3 levels of the Award Programme: Bronze, Silver and Gold levels each with different requirements for completion. One may join at any level though the requirements will slightly change. More information will be availed at the Induction Camp organised by the University of Nairobi Unit.
What does it all entail?
The Award Programme is subdivided into four sections: Skills, Service, Physical Recreation and Adventurous journey. These sections are undertaken in all the 3 levels. However, there is an additional requirement at the Gold level: A Residential Project.
Skills Section:
This section encourages development of personal interest and skills. One may undertake to learn a new skill or improve an existing one. Examples of activities undertaken in this section are: Playing music instruments, learning new languages and cookery.
Service Section:
It involves giving back to the immediate community in order to make a difference. This provides the participant with a sense of worth and enables him or her to overcome ignorance, prejudice, apathy and fear. Examples of activities undertaken are: Community and Health Education and Environmental Preservation programs.
Physical Recreation section:
It involves participating in physical recreation to improve on performance, health and fitness. Good examples of the activities undertaken include: ball sports. Dancing, athletics, martial arts and rock climbing.
Adventurous Journey:
The participant undertakes a journey in a group which encourages the spirit of adventure and discovery. It also equips the participant with skills such as camp crafting, map reading and navigation as well as team work.
Residential Project:
Under this requirement, one undertakes a purposeful project within an unfamiliar residential setting for a period of 5 days and 4 nights. Examples of projects undertaken include: Environmental clean ups, volunteer work with national parks, service to other people and communities e.g. working in a care home or hospital.
How to Join?
An individual may either register for the program through the Online Record Book (ORB) system or the Manual Record Book system.
ORB Requirements:
